Lloyd Harding

This CD is a tribute to Lloyd Harding Western Australian Master knife maker, 1921 to 2003. It is only a small sample of
his work, much of it is unrecorded. It is intended to give inspiration and practical assistance to new and established
makers. 104 templates and 300 drawing have been scanned to scale to allow them to be printed as templates. Many
were worked on in photo shop to remove back grounds to assist in printing. There are 100 color images of completed
knives and various photos of Lloyd Harding. All are free to copy the disc provided the due credit is given to Lloyd
Harding and copies are distributed free of charge with intention of assisting the art of knife making and remembrance
of a true craftsman and gentleman. Not for sale or profit.
Jim Steel introduced me to Lloyd in 1993. We sat in Jim’s lounge. Lloyd had an ordinary looking plastic shopping bag
with him. Lloyd pulled out a knife carefully wrapped in cloth. I thought wow look at that, I was amazed someone could
make such a fine piece. Lloyd was always modest and preferred to sing the praises of other makers. However I
suspect he had a touch of the showman in him, as he pulled out one fantastic knife after another they just got better
and better the deeper into that bag he went. I was hooked.

I was privileged to become one of the many who received knife-making lessons from Lloyd, and like many others I am
proud to say he was a true friend. I have never met anyone else like him and doubt I ever will.

I will remember his tremendous knife making skills and try to pass them on to others as best as I can.
I will miss his humor, his generosity of spirit, his kindness, and his quiet dignity.

You could tell when Lloyd liked a knife. He would smile, look pleased, and say something like “Ah beauty” or “Wow.”
That is the way I will to remember him, smiling and happy. That and his magic shopping bag.
